Vachetta leather is a lightly greased, fine cowhide. It is considered one of the purest and finest types of leather in the world. The word "vache" means "cow" in French. The name Vachette leather or Vachetten is also used from time to time.

Vachetta leather is made from large cowhides. The hides are split before tanning. Bull hides are usually used as the raw material. Cow hides are used less frequently. Vachetta leather is usually only lightly greased. In contrast to this, there are the so-called greased vachettas, where the leather is heavily greased and also blackened.

Cow hide is usually tanned leather, which means that it is tanned exclusively with vegetable tanning agents. Oak, chestnut or spruce wood as well as the bark and leaves of selected trees and shrubs are suitable for tanning. Cow hide is rarely chrome tanned. You will then find it in specialist shops under the name "chrome cow hide".

The soft cowhide leather is often offered undyed. This is not surprising. Its harmonious, strikingly dark natural color works perfectly without any color. Of course, cowhide leather is also available dyed. The noble material is completely dyed and comes into its own in every color imaginable. The natural material can simply be embossed or finished with color.

Pleasantly soft and yet robust - leather is breathable and yet fairly waterproof. It feels pleasantly warm and, depending on the type of animal and the processing, the surface is smooth, rough or grained. Despite its thinness, cowhide is, like all types of cowhide, extremely stable and tear-resistant. The combination of the soft feel, suppleness and tear resistance is what makes vachetta leather so special.
