BRAUN BÜFFEL

Wie entsteht eine handgefertigte Geldbörse?

A fascinating development begins at the heart of the traditional BRAUN BÜFFEL manufacturer when high-quality leather ends up in the hands of experienced fine leather craftsmen - a process in which every detail counts. Watch how carefully selected materials and masterful craftsmanship create a unique accessory: a handmade wallet using the Johann collection as an example. Follow the process, which ranges from selecting the leather to cutting, sewing and finishing. A look behind the scenes that reveals the fine art of traditional craftsmanship and the attention to detail in every single wallet. Immerse yourself in this exciting journey of German craftsmanship.

THE LEATHER SELECTION

The production of a leather wallet always begins with the precious material. The quality, properties and nature of the leather determine which product can be made from it. When the new leather hides are delivered, they must first be checked very carefully. The leather of a single animal can vary greatly. On the belly side, for example, the grain pattern of the leather is looser and softer, on the back it is firmer and more even. An experienced fine leather worker can read the leather, so to speak, and determine the processing precisely.

The Johann collection is characterised by raw processed cowhide, which has an expressive and puristic character. It is also called saddle leather or bare leather . It is a vegetable-tanned, moderately greased leather with a thickness of at least 2.5 mm. It typically has a flat grain. The leather is very durable due to its strength. The use of high-quality vegetable-tanned, supple saddle leather offers not only a tactile but also a visual experience.

THE FIRST STEPS IN THE MANUFACTURING OF A WALLET

Johann's journey begins: It leads from the leather warehouse into the production rooms of our Kirn factory. There the material goes to the cutting shop . Here the individual leather pieces are cut precisely and carefully. When prototypes are made, this is done by hand using carefully made paper templates. If a leather accessory goes into series production, an individual punching tool is made for each of the templates. A skilled worker then takes over the cutting on the punching machine. For the Johann collection, the appropriate punching tools, which resemble cookie cutters, are available in production. During production, the puncher must now decide which piece of leather is best suited for each part of the wallet. The challenge here is to produce a high-quality leather cutout while keeping material waste as low as possible. The cutouts are then split to the desired processing thickness using a machine - in other words, cut accordingly thinner. The outer parts of the Johann wallet remain somewhat stronger than, for example, the leather parts from which the credit card compartments are later made. In the next step, a selected section of leather is embossed with the company logo at approximately 130 degrees Celsius.

THE FINE WORKERS IN THE PRODUCTION OF A WALLET

Johann then sets off to sharpen the edges . This means that the leather edges are cut thinner using a machine so that they can be folded over more easily in the subsequent manufacturing process. This is where the fine bag makers' fine work begins, which requires real dexterity and experience. In the next step, the snap fastener is carefully attached to Johann's coin compartment using the snap fastener machine - here, too, precision is of the essence. The individual parts are now carefully put together using leather glue to create the basic structure of the wallet. Using various tools, such as a bone folder , the fine bag makers conscientiously fold the edges. Putting the individual parts together is like a puzzle. Leather, lining and reinforcing materials are processed with the utmost precision in constant interplay with one another. Millimeter work - in the truest sense of the word.

FINAL WORK STEPS IN THE MANUFACTORY

The next step? Quilting! With the help of our machines and employees, the seams are attached that give Johann his unmistakable shape. The quilter works precisely on a quilting machine and gives the assembled wallet its final stability. Only the combination of all these work steps turns Johann into not just an accessory, but a masterpiece of craftsmanship. Finally, each wallet is subjected to a final and extensive quality control . The production of a handmade, unique item is a time-consuming process. The attention to detail and the dedication that goes into every step make the products in the Johann collection something very special.
