Not all suede leather is the same. It is a collective term for all types of leather with a sanded surface. This includes suede leather as well as nubuck leather sanded on the grain side.

Even though suede and rough leather are often used synonymously in everyday language, these two types of leather describe different things. Suede refers to types of leather that are obtained from the skin of wild animals such as deer, roe deer or wild boar. Suede, i.e. suede or nubuck leather, on the other hand, describes a manufacturing process in which the surface of the leather is split or sanded, giving it a velvety feel.
NUBUCK LEATHER AND SUEDE – WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE?
Both suede and nubuck leather are types of rough leather with a distinctive leather pile. However, the manufacturing processes that result in the characteristic velvety feel of the rough leather are different.
How is nubuck leather made?
Nubuck leather is mainly made from fine calf or cowhide, which is sanded on the grain side. The leather is sanded using metal sanding to create a fine pile. This roughens the surface of the leather without losing its density and strength. Suede is a split leather and is obtained from the split meat, which means it has a lower surface density. Nubuck leather is therefore usually perceived as the more elegant type of suede.
HOW DO I RECOGNIZE NUBUCK LEATHER?
In comparison, nubuck leather has a much finer, velvetier surface than the coarser suede. Depending on how much the leather has been sanded, a grain structure can still be seen on closer inspection. The pile of nubuck leather changes noticeably when you stroke it.
WHAT AREAS OF APPLICATION ARE THERE FOR NUBUCK?
The suppleness and soft feel make nubuck leather a popular material for upholstered furniture and clothing such as leather jackets or trousers. As already mentioned, nubuck leather is very breathable. Thanks to the open-pored structure, water vapor and sweat can escape to the outside more easily than with smooth leather. The suede can also be made very water-repellent by impregnating it. These advantageous properties ensure that this leather is particularly popular in the sports and hiking sectors and is also ideal for climbing and work gloves.
BENEFITS OF NUBUCK LEATHER
The elegant nubuck leather is soft and breathable, but at the same time more durable than other types of suede. Roughening the surface makes the leather soft and supple. It gets its characteristic warm, velvety feel. Small scratches and scuffs can often be almost completely concealed using special care brushes.
DISADVANTAGES OF NUBUCK LEATHER
Although nubuck leather is more robust than its related suede counterpart, its roughened surface makes it more sensitive to dirt and UV light than smooth leather. Appropriate care and waterproofing are therefore extremely important for nubuck leather.
HOW TO CARE FOR AND CLEAN NUBUCK LEATHER?
If the leather is carefully cared for and impregnated, you can enjoy the fine nubuck leather products for a very long time.
It is important to know what the special features of nubuck leather are: the roughened surface makes it more supple, but also more sensitive to moisture, dirt and UV light. Therefore, protect your nubuck leather products with a suitable impregnation.
To clean the leather of light dirt such as dust, it is best to brush it dry with a dirt brush. Small scratches and cracks can often be concealed well with the help of the brush. There are also special raw rubber brushes for nubuck leather. Dirt erasers for suede are also suitable for removing specific stains.
Nubuck leather absorbs moisture and fats like a sponge. This creates stains that are difficult to remove. You should therefore protect your nubuck leather products from moisture and never allow them to come into contact with care products that contain fat.
For regular care of the leather, gently roughen the material with a brush and then reseal it with a suede impregnation.
