A companion for life - that's what a high-quality leather bag should ideally be. Leather is durable, resilient and robust. It has all the qualities for a long-term relationship. But like any relationship, the relationship with your beloved leather products also requires care. Waterproofing is the first, important step towards a shared future full of valuable and fulfilling moments, without any drama, sadness or moments of horror.
Be sure to waterproof leather before wearing it for the first time
Throw the new leather bag over your shoulder immediately after buying it? We all want to do that, but now it's time to be cautious:
As resilient as leather may be, it is also an organic material. Without waterproofing, your leather bag is at the mercy of all environmental influences such as dirt, moisture, heat, cold and UV radiation. Waterproofing agents optimize the good properties of the leather. They penetrate the fabric of the leather bag and form a protective film over the surface. As with good skin care, a good waterproofing agent allows the leather to continue to breathe. The more open-pored and softer the leather, the more sensitive it is to dirt and moisture. You should waterproof all types of leather. However, it is important to use the right waterproofing agent for the type of leather in question.
Impregnating nubuck and suede leather
The roughened, open-pored surface of suede leather such as nubuck and velour leather is particularly sensitive to dirt and moisture. With suede leather, the inside of the leather is turned outwards. Suede leather, colloquially also called suede, is impregnated with special suede sprays that make the leather less susceptible to water stains and dirt. At the same time, the impregnation spray preserves the typical, velvety fiber pile of suede leather.
Caution: The waterproofing can only protect the suede from environmental influences to a limited extent. However, you should not expose a suede bag to all weather conditions. Is it pouring with rain? Then it's better to take a different bag with you outside that day.
Impregnating smooth leather
Smooth leather generally has a higher natural strength and resilience than suede. It can also be impregnated with special impregnation sprays or leather wax, which simultaneously
maintains.
But be careful : There are very different types of smooth leather. It is best to find out how to best care for your product when you buy it and ask for a suitable product for waterproofing. Leather grease or leather wax should only be used on shiny smooth leather. Matte smooth leather can lose its authentic appearance when treated with wax.

Impregnation in three steps
- cleaning
Since your leather bag is brand new, it should be clean. If you decide to re-impregnate the bag later, we recommend cleaning the leather first. We'll explain what you should pay attention to below.
2. Spraying
Let's get started: To waterproof the leather, it's best to find a dry place in the fresh air so that you don't inhale the gases emitted by the waterproofing spray. Spray the leather bag evenly and thinly with the waterproofing spray from a distance of about 30 centimeters. Make sure that the leather doesn't get too wet.
3. Allow to take effect
Allow the impregnation to take effect for around 20 minutes and repeat the process two or three times. For optimum protection of the leather through the impregnation, wait 24 hours before taking your leather bag out for the first time. It's worth the wait, we promise!
Re-impregnating your leather bag
Depending on how often you use your leather bag, it is advisable to repeat the waterproofing every few months or years, as the protective layer wears off over time. It is important that you clean the leather gently beforehand.
Cleaning nubuck and suede leather
Suede does not tolerate moisture very well, so you should avoid water and liquid care products. The best way to clean your nubuck or suede bag is with a dirt eraser or with specially developed lotions and a soft suede brush.
Cleaning smooth leather
You can clean smooth leather with a cloth moistened with distilled water. You can achieve deep cleaning by using special cleaning agents, such as leather cleaning foam, which is applied to the leather with a cloth in gentle movements. You can then pamper the leather with a care product tailored to the type of leather and then re-impregnate it as described above.
High-quality leather products are elaborately handcrafted and made with great attention to detail. Continue this love by carefully caring for and waterproofing your leather bag. A lovingly cared for leather bag will accompany you for a lifetime and may even be passed on to the next generation. The joy you will have with your leather product is definitely worth the effort!
