Hygiene comes first! But we often forget where we come into contact with bacteria or viruses in everyday life. When shopping, you first grab the shopping cart and then at the checkout you grab your wallet and then you touch your face. The same applies to handbags. In this case, it is not just the handle that is particularly affected, but also the underside of the bag. We are all too happy to put the bag down on the floor without thinking. In a restaurant, in the office, in the park, the temptation is too great to just put the bag down. This collects dirt, which is then carried into our own four walls. Since high-quality leather products can be in use for up to several decades, the spread of bacteria is unimaginable. In drastic terms, you can say that handbags are among the worst germ spreaders.

But don't panic! Of course, you don't have to throw away your beloved wallet or handbag. The advantage of real leather over other textiles is clearly the cleaning and care. We'll show you how you can protect yourself and your leather favorites.

HOW TO IMPREGNATE YOUR LEATHER PRODUCTS

A beautiful leather bag or wallet is not only a visual highlight, but is usually a quality product that is characterized by its durability. The fact is: real leather should be cared for just like our human skin. The first and easiest step is waterproofing. It is understandable if you want to use the new leather accessory straight away. But before that, you should think a little more far-sightedly and waterproof your new purchase. Waterproofing agents change or optimize the properties of a solid material. This protects the leather from water, moisture and dirt. If waterproofing is not done, water stains can form and dirt can penetrate the pores.

What should you look out for? The method of choice depends primarily on the material of the garment, as different membranes and fabrics sometimes require different impregnations. For your leather goods, you can use impregnation sprays or impregnation wax. The protective layer wears off depending on how often the garment is used. The decision as to whether and how often to re-impregnate therefore varies from product to product.

CLEANING TIPS FOR WALLETS AND BAGS

The wallet is and will remain a commodity. Even the best quality means that it is often used every day. Wallets are particularly susceptible to the spread of bacteria as they carry cash. But bags are also used every day. With these simple cleaning tips, you can kill bacteria and at the same time care for your everyday companions. First and foremost, it is important what type of leather your wallet is made of. The care products are specially designed for the surface structure. Ideally, nothing will happen if it is treated incorrectly, but there is no guarantee.

Many suppliers offer care balms, foams or soaps for leather. The way something is treated is usually important for the different surfaces. One way to identify the different types of leather for selecting the right auxiliary and cleaning products is that open-pored leather has a matte sheen but does not shine. Smooth leather, on the other hand, can really shine if it is of good quality. Open-pored leather types are also characterized by very soft surfaces.

  1. Leather with the grain side facing outwards is called smooth leather . Bags and wallets made of smooth leather are made from cowhide, calf leather or goat leather. Dirt can be removed with a lint-free cloth and a little leather cleaning foam. For care, use wax spray, care milk or a leather care lotion.
  2. Open-pored leather types such as suede (deer or elk leather) do not tolerate moisture quite as well. Clean this leather with a dry cloth. Suitable care products are a dirt eraser or leather cleaning foam. It is important that the products are massaged in with a brush and only a little pressure. To ensure that the suede wallet remains an eye-catcher for a long time, it should be cared for regularly with wax spray or lotion for leather. Leather grease is not suitable for roughened leather as it leaves residue.
  3. Suede and nubuck leather are fine rough leathers that are lightly sanded on the grain side, giving them a velvety character. These should be treated with a special cleaning agent. Similar to suede, the agent should be worked in with little pressure and in a circular motion.
  4. Patent leather is water-repellent and airtight. During the manufacturing process, the leather is varnished on the grain side or covered with a film. This creates a shiny surface. No greasy care products should be used to clean patent leather bags, as these cannot be absorbed into the leather. Cleaning is done with a soft, damp cloth or sponge.
  5. Pull-up or fat leather is characterized by a unique patina that results from scratches and creases in the fatty, oily, waxy layer. It is also known as saddle leather or oil leather. Light signs of wear can be repaired with a sponge and leather grease. Products for fat leather are suitable for care. It should be noted that the leather is sensitive and can change quickly. But this is precisely what makes the leather product unique.

If water was used to clean the leather bag or wallet, you should be particularly careful when drying it. Heat from a heater and UV light must be avoided at all costs. If placed on a hot radiator, the leather bag can become permanently deformed. There is also a very high risk of the heat causing cracks in the leather. UV light can cause the leather to fade and also have a lasting effect on its quality. The wet leather product dries relatively quickly on its own. To speed things up, you can use a lot of paper and take it out into the fresh air.

It is often said that household remedies are just as suitable for cleaning leather as special leather care products. In general, there are combinations that work. However, you should approach cleaning with great care. You should definitely not use the following household products :

  • Nail polish remover does not remove leather stains, but rather accentuates them.
  • A high-quality shoe polish can indeed also be used to care for handbags, but caution is advised here. Some products can lead to a reduction in quality.

  • Pumice stones or coarse sponges roughen the leather and thereby damage the surface.

  • Acidic cleaning agents can cause discoloration in the leather.

A leather product is a loyal companion for a long time and is easy to clean. Not only the appearance plays a role, but also health. In principle, the care instructions should be studied carefully and carried out carefully. When cleaning with unfamiliar or new products, always test on an area that is not directly visible.
