PULL-UP-Leder

The strong character among the leathers

Temperamental, stubborn, individual, but in any case anything but normal – this is the best way to describe the powerful character of pull-up leather.

Collections made of pull-up leather are expressive, functional and elegant, but still smart and special. The durable leather is easy to care for and develops a very special, unique patina with use.

How is pull-up leather made?

Pull-up leather is smooth leather or nubuck leather, which is usually made from cow or calf hides. During the finishing process, the leather is given an additional fatty, oily or waxy layer or is dyed. This is also called fat leather .

This fatty, oily or waxy layer gives the pull-up leather its special character. It can be applied or dyed. When the leather is dyed, it is placed in a large drum with the corresponding coloring substance. Once the substance is applied, the leather is spread out on a table and the layer is massaged in with a sponge.

What makes pull-up leather so special?

The processing makes the pull-up leather very sensitive to creases and scratches. This means that when the leather is bent or scratched, it becomes lighter in those places - an effect that is intended. When the leather products are used, a distinctive patina is created, which gives the pull-up leather its typical vintage look. Despite its sensitive surface, pull-up leather is very durable and robust.

How do I care for pull-up leather?

brown pull-up leather with scratches in the patina

Pull-up leather contains a lot of fat. If you want to tone down the light areas of the leather, simply rub it with a dry, clean cotton cloth. This will rub away the fat and make the leather darker again. Open-pored pull-up leather is very sensitive to moisture. It should be treated with a special waterproofing spray . You can then rub the leather with an aniline balm to give it some fat again and freshen up the look.

Dark spots can be lightened again by carefully stretching the surface.

Attention, risk of confusion between pull-up leather and PU leather!

Due to the similarity in names, pull-up leather is sometimes confused with PU leather. Unlike aniline-dyed pull-up leather, PU leather is covered with a polyurethane coating and differs greatly from soft pull-up leather, not least in terms of handling, feel and care.

Polyurethane-coated split leather looks similar to pull-up leather at first glance, but is not as susceptible to creases and scratches. PU leather is of lower quality than pull-up leather.

A leather for individualists

The beautiful pull-up leather is a little strange. Due to its scratch-sensitive surface, the temperamental leather is often misunderstood: laypeople think that the sensitive leather is delicate and inferior. In reality, it is particularly robust and it is this deliberate patina that makes pull-up leather so unique. Made from pull-up leather, no two belts, bags or wallets are the same. Owners of pull-up leather goods are owners of truly unique pieces. The robust leather with its soft, delicate feel tells a story that grows with use and continues to evolve.
